SB: Team Saxo Bank's world champions delivered a world class performance in the final hunt of the six-day race in Ballerup Super Arena, Copenhagen where the four leading couples never found time to negotiate a ceasefire and the excitement remained unbearable until the very last lap of the chase.
With fifteen remaining minutes of the race four couples were in the lead and an average speed of 53 km/h naturally implies a very dramatic finale. The five sprints of each 10 point's worth made the difference on the outcome, and Team Saxo Bank's Alex Rasmussen demonstrated his huge sprint capacity by distancing all competition in the very last sprint of the night securing Team Saxo Bank's couple the overall victory.
”This is a historc victory since no one else has ever won the six-day race in Copenhagen two years in a row. The finale was just incredibly intense and there's actually no control of things, but Alex was ready for the last sprint where he knows how to deliver. We really appreciate the huge suopport from the crowd here, and we were also motivated by the fact that Bjarne was here to support us tonight. It is a satisfaction for us to prove that letting us take time off the road season to do this has paid off”, says Michael Mørkøv after the finale.
Michael Mørkøv will be riding Milano-San Remo in March while Alex Rasmussen will be focusing on Paris-Roubaix in April.
Tonight, the six-day race in Copenhagen was Bruno Risi's very last as a professional and the active Swiss legend was duly celebrated by the riders and the crowd who has enjoyed his fair way of riding aggressively throughout the years. The 41-year-old Swiss has an impressive record of 61 six-day victories from the 19 years as a professional.
